SMART PACKING
🌱 Must Have Vegan-Friendly Travel Essentials

One of the biggest struggles of traveling as a vegan is finding plant-based food when hunger strikes. Instead of relying on whatever is available (which is often unhealthy), bring your own travel-friendly snacks and meal staples:

Fresh Fruit – Pack up fresh fruit like grapes, apples, or berries for natural dose of hydration. Fruit will also boost your energy and keep you from craving the junk stuff.

Use reusable snack bags like these to keep to keep it eco-friendly and fresh longer.

Nut & Seed Butters – Almond, peanut, or sunflower seed butter are great sources of protein and healthy fats. Pack individual pouches or small jars to spread on crackers, fruit, or oats.

Nut butter packets are great for travel and make it easy to pack. I just bought cashew butter packets from Artisana and they’re perfect! They make various options to choose from. Check them out here.

Trail Mix & Raw Nuts – A quick and nutrient-dense snack that provides long-lasting energy. Look for unsalted and unsweetened varieties, or make your own mix with nuts, seeds, and dried fruit.

Just make sure the dried fruit is just fruit with no added sugars or other ingredients.

Dried Fruit & Energy Bars – These are perfect for on-the-go snacking. Opt for whole-food bars like Larabars or TRUBARS with minimal ingredients.

Oats & Chia Seeds – Make overnight oats with buckwheat groats and chia seeds with plant milk, and you have a nutritious, fiber-rich breakfast. Add a banana or nut butter for added nutrients. These are super easy to make!

Let me know if you want a recipe for it and I will send it to you.😉

Reusable Water Bottle – Staying hydrated is essential for energy and digestion while traveling. A reusable bottle helps you avoid buying plastic bottles and wasting money.

Collapsible Reusable Storage Bags – These are perfect for storing leftovers from restaurants or meal prepping simple meals while traveling. Check them out here.

💡Pro Tip: Pack a piece of ginger root with a ginger grater if you’re someone who tends to get motion sickness in a car, plane, or on a cruise. Trust me, it comes in handy!

EATING OUT
🥗 How to Find Vegan-Friendly Place to Eat

Eating out as a vegan can be stressful if you’re unfamiliar with the local food scene. But with the right tools, you can easily find amazing plant-based meals wherever you go:

🌍 Use Vegan Apps – Apps like HappyCow and abillion help you locate the best vegan-friendly restaurants worldwide.

📲 Google Smart Searches – Search for “best vegan restaurants near me” or “vegan-friendly cafes in [city name].” Checking reviews and photos can give you a better idea of what’s available.

One of my favorite tools to use for checking reviews is TripAdvisor. It’s a great source for getting all kinds of reviews - from restaurants to accommodations to destinations and activities. Save it. I promise it will come in handy!

🥗 Check Menus in Advance – Most restaurants post their menus online. Look for vegetable-heavy dishes that can be customized. If nothing seems vegan-friendly, call ahead and ask if they can make modifications.

Most of the time chefs or restaurants are willing to accommodate you.

💬 Communicate with Servers – Ask about vegan options or request simple swaps, like replacing dairy with plant-based alternatives or swapping out meat for extra veggies. Most of the time, swaps are easy.

If you order a salad, taking your own salad dressing in a small travel container is great if you can do that or just request oil and vinegar or lemon juice as alternative options.

I normally wouldn’t suggest oils but if it makes it easier for you, using oil occasionally won’t kill you.

💡 Pro Tip: Ethnic cuisines tend to have more vegan-friendly dishes. Try Thai (curries with coconut milk), Middle Eastern (falafel, hummus), Mediterranean (grains, salads, roasted veggies), or Indian (lentil dishes, vegetable curries).

ACCOMMODATIONS
🏨 Choosing Vegan & Eco-Friendly Places to Stay

Where you stay can make a huge difference in how easy it is to stick to a plant-based routine. Here’s what to look for:

Hotels or Airbnb with a Kitchenette – Having access to a kitchen means you can prepare simple meals instead of relying on restaurants for every meal.

Eco-Friendly Stays – Some hotels prioritize sustainability by offering organic, local food and reducing waste. Check if they have vegan options in their breakfast buffet or on any of their menus!

Farm Stays & Vegan Hotels – Some accommodations, like The Stanford Inn by the Sea (CA) or Saorsa 1875 (Scotland), are fully vegan and plant-based which means you won’t have to worry about meal options.

💡 Pro Tip: If your hotel doesn’t offer many plant-based options, find a local grocery store or farmer’s market to stock up on fresh produce, plant-based snacks, and ready-to-eat meals. - Even better if you book your stay near a health food store or farmer’s market. It will make it easy to keep it healthy!

SUSTAINABILITY
🌎 How to Reduce Your Impact Amidst Your Travels

Traveling mindfully isn’t just about what you eat—it’s also about how you travel. Here’s how you can stay vegan AND eco-friendly on your adventures:

🌱 Say No to Single-Use Plastics – Bring a bamboo cutlery set, metal straw, and reusable coffee cup to avoid disposable waste.

🥤 Refill Your Bottle – Many airports, hotels, and restaurants now have refill stations, so you don’t have to buy plastic water bottles.

🛍 Support Local & Sustainable Businesses – Instead of eating at big chains, seek out small, locally-owned vegan cafes and eco-conscious markets that prioritize ethical sourcing.

🍃 Reduce Food Waste – If you have leftovers from a meal, store them in your reusable container and enjoy them later instead of letting food go to waste.

💡 Pro Tip: If you’re heading to environmentally friendly destinations, choose vegan-friendly hiking snacks like homemade energy bites, fresh fruit, and veggie wraps for a low-waste, high-energy boost!
