Let’s talk about something that’s become way too common in today’s world of “eco-conscious” products and “natural” branding:

Greenwashing.

It sounds harmless, but it’s a sneaky marketing tactic used by companies to appear environmentally friendly—without actually being eco-friendly, healthy, or ethical. And the worst part? You might be spending more money on products that don’t align with your values… just because the packaging says “clean” or “green.”

Let’s break it down further…

🥬 What is Greenwashing, Exactly?

Greenwashing is when a company uses misleading terms, imagery, or branding to convince you a product is natural, eco-friendly, or healthy—when it’s really not. It gives the illusion of sustainability without the substance.

These products are often wrapped in kraft paper packaging, stamped with words like “sustainable,” “natural,” “eco,” or “plant-powered,” and feature pictures of leaves, herbs, or earthy tones. It’s an aesthetic designed to build trust and appeal to conscious shoppers like you. But don’t be fooled—when you flip the product over and read the ingredients or sourcing information, the truth is often far less green.

Greenwashing isn’t just annoying—it can cost you money, compromise your health, and contribute to environmental harm under the guise of doing good. That’s why knowing how to spot it is so important.

🧐 What to Be on the Lookout For

Here are some of the biggest red flags to keep an eye out for when shopping:

🔍 Vague buzzwords – Words like clean, green, pure, natural, plant-based, eco-friendly have no standardized definitions in the consumer goods industry. These words can mean anything—or nothing. If a product makes these claims but doesn’t back them up with specifics, be wary.

📦 Earthy packaging tricks – Recycled-looking paper, green color schemes, leaves or water drops on the label—they're often just a visual marketing ploy. Pretty packaging doesn’t equal sustainability.

🧪 Lengthy or hidden ingredients – Some brands bury harmful or synthetic ingredients under the catch-all term “fragrance” or “parfum.” Others use scientific-sounding additives that mask preservatives or harsh chemicals.

🚫 No third-party certifications – Look for credible certifications like USDA Organic, EWG Verified, Leaping Bunny (for cruelty-free), or Fair Trade. If there’s no certification and the brand is making bold eco-claims, be cautious.

💸 Price doesn’t equal quality – Don’t assume that a $20 “eco” cleaner is safer than a $5 one without doing the research. Many greenwashed products are marked up because they look the part—but still perform (and pollute) like conventional options.

🧠 Tips to Outsmarting Greenwashing Tactics

You don’t need to be a pro at reading labels to make empowered choices. Here’s how to stay ahead of the marketing tricks:

Always flip the product over – The front is all about selling. The back reveals what’s really inside. Read the full ingredient list—not just the buzzwords.

Get familiar with toxic ingredients – Ingredients like phthalates, parabens, sulfates, synthetic dyes, and artificial fragrances are common in greenwashed products. Learning to recognize these will help you quickly weed out the bad ones.

Support ethical, transparent brands – Many small businesses go the extra mile to prioritize sustainability, ethical sourcing, and full ingredient transparency. They may not be on every shelf, but they’re often worth seeking out.

Focus on quality, not quantity – You don’t need 20 “clean” products. Simplify and choose fewer, better items that truly meet your standards.

Trust tools that empower you – Use apps like Yuka, Think Dirty, or the EWG app to research products.
